Labourers Together With God
1 Corinthians 3:9: For we are labourers together with God: ye are God*s husbandry, ye are God*s building.
Hebrews 10:25: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
The most important place for a Christian to be a labourer together with God is a local church. The Bible likens the church to a body. Each part of the body has a function that is necessary to the healthy functioning of the entire body. The body also provides the means so that each individual part can be healthy. A part that becomes disconnected dies.
1 Corinthians 12:27-28: Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
I want to focus our thoughts on one word from that passage, the word helps. It seems to be the least important thing God has given to the church. I submit that it is the most important thing. It is the place where new Christians begin. If they don*t begin by helping they won*t amount to a hill of beans later. Helping is a first step. It is a foundation. It is the place where Christians first and most often fail. Without the first step other steps will be clumsy.
It is easy to criticize a church. But our criticism is unhelpful if we do not become part of it and try to improve it. Staying away from church is a way to harm it rather than help. If we stay away from church we will never benefit from what is right about it. Help is the easiest thing we can do within a church. Help can be a great thing or a little thing. It can be financial giving, encouraging other believers, sweeping the floor, ushering, working in the nursery, praying for other believers or a myriad of other little things. We Christians are likened to stones in a building. One missing stone or one stone out of place can weaken a building or cause its collapse.
1 Peter 2:5: Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
One AWOL soldier can cause the loss of a battle. The absence of failure of one athlete can cause a team to lose a championship. The absence or failure of one employee can harm the functions of a business. The absence or failure of one link in a chain makes the chain useless. If God wants us to join a local church and we disobey Him we share responsibility for the failures of that church to accomplish God*s will.
