Proverbs 28:9: He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.
Matthew Poole*s Commentary:
He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, that obstinately refuseth to yield audience or obedience to God*s commands, even his prayer shall be abomination to God, whose law he despised. God will abhor and reject his person, and all his services.
The passage can speak of both unbelievers and believers who reject the Word of God. Both Testaments are the Word of God. We must not reject either one. Continuing to reject Jesus is the way for an unbeliever to guarantee that none of His prayers will be answered.
John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
There are many ways for even a believer to turn away his ear from hearing God*s Word and pray prayers that will not get God*s prayers. Don*t go to a Biblical church. Don*t hear the Bible taught. Don*t study it. And don*t obey it. Commit sin, don*t confess it and don*t forsake it.
Isaiah 59:2: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Proverbs 28:13: He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Love sin more than you love Jesus.
Psalms 66:18: If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
Put other things ahead of prayer. Try to get things from God by your own sinful efforts.
James 4:2: Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
James 4:3: Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
Wreck your marriage.
1 Peter 3:7: Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
Do not take the Word of God to heart.
Psalms 119:11: Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Do not ask the Lord*s help to avoid sin.
Matthew 6:13: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
Be committed to serving someone or something other than the Lord.
Proverbs 16:3: Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
Do not ask for the help of the Holy Spirit with your prayers.
Romans 8:26: Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Do not pray in company with other believers.
Matthew 18:19: Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
Give up on prayer, neglect prayer, forget to pray and quit praying.
1 Thessalonians 5:17: Pray without ceasing.
