Christian Responsibilities

Receiving Jesus keeps us out of Hell and gets us into Heaven. It also gets us out of the family of Satan and into the family of God.

John 8:44: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

John 1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

I had a classmate back in school who had an absentee father most of the time. He did not have the guidance that my father gave me. He was often irresponsible. He had a lot of pitfalls and problems that I did not have and he did not have blessings that I had. I behaved differently than he did because I had the guidance of a present, involved and loving father. My father gave me things to be responsible for.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old my father gave me a job. It would probably be against the labor laws today, but he was teaching me responsibility. My first job was to sweep out his newspaper office each Saturday morning. It took about an hour and I was paid 25 cents for it. As I look back I realize that the greater rewards were that I had pleased my father and that I learned that there were rewards for being responsible.

When I was irresponsible there was guilt and no reward. When I was responsible there was reward and satisfaction instead of guilt. Life with my father was life on a higher plane than the life my classmate had. The last time I saw him at a reunion he was about 60 years old and he was drunk. Pray for him. The Lord is still able to save him and adopt him.

Life with our heavenly Father is also life on a higher plane than the lives of individuals who are not His children.

Psalms 19:7-11: The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

I did not earn my way into the family of my father. We do not earn our way into the family of God either. The converting of our souls is a free gift. Gifts and rewards are different. Gifts are free and rewards are earned. We avoid all sorts of pitfalls and earn all sorts of rewards when we fulfill the responsibilities that the Lord gives us, in this life and in the life to come.

Ephesians 2:10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

1 John 5:3: For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

My Pastor, Kent McBay, recently taught about some of the responsibilities that God gives to His children.

Jude 1:20: building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

Jude 1:21: Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Colossians 3:2: Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Philippians 4:8: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

2 Peter 1:5-8: And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:13: Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Ephesians 5:21: Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

James 4:10: Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

1 John 5:21: Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

2 John 8: Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

1 Timothy 4:14: Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

Hebrews 10:25: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Ephesians 4:15: But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

1 Peter 2:2: As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

2 Peter 3:18: But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Joshua 24:15: And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Romans 12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
