Denying The Power Of God

Last day phonies can have an appearance of godliness or a resemblance to it, but they eventually reveal themselves by exhibiting at least some of these characteristics:

2 Timothy 3:1-5: This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

So what is this power that they deny? It is the power of God. The power of God is involved in every facet of salvation. He has power to make us children of God, He has power to keep us and He has power to change our lives.

John 1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

1 Peter 1:1a, 2a, 5: Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the . . . 2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, . . . 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

He also wants to give us the power to live a Christian life. God puts eternal life within us and He wants us to live it. The normal things that happen when He has put spiritual life in us are that we will grow spiritually and bear spiritual fruit.

1 Peter 2:2: As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

John 15:8a: Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; . . .

Unbelievers deny that God has the power to make them His children and keep them. They do not permit Him to do those things. Sadly, even in Christians there is some denial of God*s power. They have some things in common with unbelievers. Many of them do not study their Bibles, do not grow very much and do not bear much fruit. They do not permit Him to change their lives. They do not permit Him to bear much fruit in them. They walk in the flesh. The characteristics of Christians who deny the power of God will be that they will not study their Bibles, they will not grow and will not bear much fruit. I tell you these things from personal experience as well as from the scriptures. I have not always studied my Bible, have not always grown and have not always borne much fruit. My growth and my fruit-bearing have been in fits and starts. I want them to be consistent. It is never too late to begin studying our Bible, hear it taught, grow and bear more fruit.

Galatians 5:16: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Ephesians 5:9: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
