Desperately Wicked Hearts

Jeremiah 17:9: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Don*t think that truth applies to you? Read on. There are two kinds of hearts in the world, hearts with Christ in them and hearts without Him. This does not refer to the muscles in our chests pumping blood around our bodies. It refers to the non-material part of us that will exist forever somewhere, either in Heaven or in the Lake of Fire. It is the part of us that chooses for God or against Him.

Matthew 10:18: And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Before I received Jesus I sometimes thought I was good. But the goodness men have is only good in the eyes of men. The best of men fall far short of God*s standard. When we measure ourselves against other men we can appear to be good but we make a terrible mistake.

2 Corinthians 10:12: For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

Romans 10:3: For they being ignorant of God*s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

We cannot get into Heaven because of our own righteousness. We need the righteousness of God to make it to Heaven. By God*s standard we have no righteousness.

Romans 3:10-12: As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Isaiah 64:6: But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Romans 3:23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Since there is only One that is good, the only place we bad ones can get goodness is from The Good One, from God. All three members of the Godhead, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are good. When we believe in Jesus enough to receive Him into our hearts, God imputes righteousness to us.

Matthew 12:35: A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

What distinguishes a good man from an evil man? By God*s standard a good man has Christ in his heart and an evil man does not.

Colossians 1:27: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Jesus is the gift of God. Eternal life is the gift of God. Righteousness is the gift of God.

John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5:17: For if by one man*s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

The gift of righteousness is not just something that will squeak us into Heaven. It is a new thing that will show up in our lives.

Matthew 12:35: A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
