Enemies

The Bible teaches that as believers we have three enemies, the world, the flesh and the Devil. And they often team up against us. And it is hard at times to distinguish them.

The World:

James 4:4: Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

I John 2:15-16: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Flesh:

Romans 8:5-9: For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Galatians 5:17: For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Satan:

I Peter 5:8: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Revelation 12:10: And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Luke 22:31-32: And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou are converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Satan wants to devour us, accuses us before the Father and desires to own us.

Satan does not want us reading the Bible, quoting the Bible, praying or serving God in any way. He will do anything he can to keep us from those things. He controls the unbelievers around us (within the limits God establishes). And he will use them and the circumstances of our lives to keep us from God*s will in any way he can. We need to know about his devices and resist him.

II Corinthians 2:11: Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Some good news:

James 4:7: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 John 3:8: He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

I John 4:4: Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
