Examine Your Love
Luke 10:27: And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
1 John 2:15: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
John 13:35: By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Matthew 5:44: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
We have some resources that we will spend on those we love. Just a few of those resources are our thoughts, our time, our energy, our finances and our service. If we spend those resources on ourselves, we will do that because we love ourselves. If we spend them on the world, it will be because we love the world. If we spend them on God, it will be because we love Him. If we spend them on others, it will be because we love others.
Luke 14:26: If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
The passage does not mean that we should hate others. It means we should love God more. It means we should spend most of our resources on Him. We should not spend them on the world. And we should spend them on others a whole lot more than we do.
If I love myself I will spend time alone. If I love God I will spend time with Him. If I love others I will spend time with them. If I love myself I will think of myself. If I love others I will think of them. If I love myself I will serve myself. If I love God I will serve Him. If I love others I will serve them. If I love myself I will spend my energy on myself. If I love God I will spend my energy on Him. If I love others I will spend my energy on them. If I love myself I will spend my money on myself. If I love God I will give to Him. If I love others I will spend on them.
Love is not just a mushy gushy feeling. Love spends its resources. Where are you spending your resources? If you are spending them only on yourself and the world, you are either not saved or you are quenching the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:22a: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, . . .
That kind of love is meant to come into us, return to God and go out to others.
