I Have Received Jesus . . . What Does That Mean?

It means many wonderful things that can take some time to understand. The more you learn about them the more you will be able to enjoy them. You have begun the most wonderful adventure a person can have on this side of Heaven. You will gradually learn from the Bible, your answered prayers and from the experiences God will put in your life that He really does love you and has your best interests at heart. It means that you have become a child of God with all the blessings and privileges that come to a child of His.

John 1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

The Bible describes becoming a child of God as becoming born again, born of the Spirit, born from above, saved, converted, etc. It means that God has changed your eternal destiny from the Lake of Fire to Heaven and you now have eternal life.

1 John 5:11: And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

Before you received Jesus the Bible called you some very negative things: lost, the enemy of God, having the wrath of God abiding on you, alienated from God and in need of being reconciled to Him.

Luke 19:10: For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Romans 8:7a: Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: . . .

John 3:36: He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

2 Corinthians 5:18: And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

God has given you peace with Him through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

God has a plan for you and for your life. He planned the moment He would save you and He has a plan for the good works He will enable you to do between now and the day He takes you to Heaven.

Ephesians 2:10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

He will give you the ability to understand the Bible better than before. The blindness of your heart has been removed. You will be able to perceive things with the eyes of your heart that you could not before.

John 3:3: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

You have changed sides in the battle of the ages. You now have an enemy called Satan. He did not want you to become a child of God and He would prefer that you not believe that you have. He will try to convince you that God has not saved you. He always opposes God and he will now oppose you. But we don*t need to fear Satan because God is greater than anyone.

1 John 4:4: Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Because of all God has done for you, you owe Him everything. But He doesn*t want you to serve Him because of duty. He wants you to serve Him because you love Him. The more you learn about His love for you, the more you will love Him and want to serve Him.

1 John 4:19: We love him, because he first loved us.

We who have received Jesus into our hearts are secure forever.

John 10:28: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

The phrase eternal life only speaks about the quantity of it. It also has a superior quality to it.

John 10:10b: . . . I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

It does not necessarily mean financial or material abundance, it means a better life. Countless believers will tell you that life with God in it is far better than life without Him.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Ephesians 2:10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

You will learn that because God loves us the commands He gives us are for OUR benefit.

Deuteronomy 5:33a: Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you . . .

You will still have the capability to sin and be miserable at times. Since we had the joy of being forgiven for our sins, when we fail God and sin again we can be more miserable than we were before we experienced the joy. When that happens some believe that they are unsaved. When one who has received Christ sins he is still a child of God and God*s forgiveness is available to him.

1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

There is no condemnation for His children but there will be chastening when they sin.

Romans 8:1: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Hebrews 12:6: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

When we are new in the Lord we are like spiritual babies. We should grow. We should become strong and healthy Christians. We need spiritual food. The Bible is spiritual food.

1 Peter 2:2: As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

The more we read, study and memorize the Bible the more we will grow and the more vigorous we will be as Christians. The Bible will become wonderful to you if you give it a chance. As Christians we will be deeply troubled by our sins. But we can quickly confess them and have joy again.

Psalms 51:12: Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

I suggest we should start our Bible study in the book of John, which teaches that Jesus is God, then study the book of Romans which teaches important Christian doctrines, then study the book of Proverbs which gives wisdom for living and then ask the Lord which book of the Bible to study next. He now wants you to follow Him through the mine-fields of this life.

John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

He will want you to regularly attend a Biblical church. My minimum standard for a Biblical church is that it will encourage people to receive Christ. Unbiblical churches will focus on something else.

I attend and recommend North Mesa Baptist Church. Prayer 9:15 a.m., Sunday School 9:30 a.m., Worship Services 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Midweek Service 7:00 p.m. Thursday. The church meets at 4323 E. Broadway Rd., Mesa, AZ, 85206. Phone 480-284-7193. You can hear Pastor McBay*s messages at www.northmesabc.com.

If you have a computer you can study the Bible at www.bibletopicsandquestions.com and you can reach me with questions, comments or prayer requests at that website.
