Living Water

Jeremiah 2:13: For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

John 4:7: There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

John 7:37: In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 6:63: It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The word quick in Hebrews 4:12 is the same word as living in John chapters 4 and 7. The living water that Jesus gives is certainly different from the H2O that we drink. H2O is physical and temporary. H2O provides physical life. The living water provides spiritual life. Living water is spiritual and eternal. You can see the H2O. You cannot see the living water. But you can see many of the results it produces. For one thing, it changes disobedient sinners into obedient servants of God.

John 3:6: That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Our bodies consist of between 50 and 75 percent of physical water. Without it, we become dehydrated and get sick or die physically. But it is not alive spiritually. Thirst for H2O is physical. Thirst for living water is spiritual. We thirst every day for physical water. But one drink of the spiritual water satisfies our spiritual thirst forever. Like physical water is needed for temporary and physical life, living water is needed for spiritual and eternal life. God the Father, Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, other believers and faith in God are all unexplainably involved in providing the living water to us. Rivers of it flow out of the belly of believers in Jesus.

John 7:38: He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Though living water is unseen and mysterious, obtaining it is simple. When we receive Jesus, He gives it to us and sends it through us to others.
