Lying Tongues Hate

Proverbs 26:28: A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Lying is a symptom of hatred. Lies trap both the teller and the believer of them. The truth spoken in love will free both the tellers of truth and the believers of truth. Every sin we commit is connected to believing something that is not true.

Ephesians 4:15, 25: But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 25: Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

The book of Ephesians was written to believers. God knew that even as Christians we would still have a problem with lying.

Ephesians 1:1: Paul, an apostle . . . to the saints which are at Ephesus, . . .

Early on after I received Jesus I was shocked that when I had a problem with someone, my first thought for solving the problem was a lie. Blessedly, the Lord showed me the lie and didn*t permit it to come out of my mouth. Many times I have thought lies that didn*t come out of my mouth. In my decades as a Christian I have been shocked many times by the lies that my flesh would like to tell. Many times a lie has actually come out of my mouth. Blessedly the Lord has quickly spoken to my heart and told me it was not true. I have had the opportunity to say to the one hearing the lie: Wait a minute, that was not true and tell them the truth before the lie could do any damage. I was also shocked to learn that when I have lied to people it was a symptom of hatred.

Proverbs 26:28: A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Not only do those who lie to me hate me but when I lie to someone, my flesh hates them. Our flesh is capable of all sorts of sins, including lying and hating.

Psalms 120:2: Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

Proverbs 10:18: He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

Proverbs 12:22: Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

Proverbs 17:7: Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

Jonah 2:8: They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

We all need to pray this prayer of David. And we should pray it often.

Psalms 141:3: Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

As Christians we need to grow in our love for the truth and our hatred for lying. A love of the truth comes with salvation. Paul wrote some desperate things about those who never receive the love of the truth.

2 Thessalonians 2:10: And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

When we do not love truth, we do not love Jesus or the Bible. We must love the spoken truth, the written truth and the living truth.

Proverbs 6:16-17a: These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him. 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, . . .

I am so thankful that lying can be confessed, forsaken and forgiven.
