A Matter Of Life And Death

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to have a death-wish? It seems they would rather rush toward death than to live a full life. They get involved with drugs, alcohol, over-eating, smoking or other risk-taking activities. They carry on a flirtation with death. They seem actually to delight in gambling with their life.

I believe we all have seeds of self-destructiveness in us. We all have some tendencies toward death. It is more prevalent in some than others. Some people seem helpless to change this tendency. They have a feeling of futility or helplessness in this life and sometimes actually do end it deliberately. My former pastor, Dan Lupton counseled a man who was contemplating suicide that it was the ultimate act of unbelief.

Proverbs 8:36: But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Every sin is a crime against oneself as well as against God. Every sin is in some fashion a blow against life.

Satan tempted Jesus and tried to get Him to risk His life and tempt God.

Matthew 4:5-7: Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

When we mortals risk our lives we also are tempting God.

God is the source of life. Both mortal life and eternal life are gifts from God. We should value both. Satan is the source of death. Read what Jesus said to some evil unbelievers:

John 8:44: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

How one feels about gifts from God is an indicator of how one feels about God Himself. Despise God -- despise life, love God -- love life, value God -- value life, disrespect God -- disrespect life. If God is precious to you, life will be precious to you.

Thank God that Jesus has defeated Satan and will defeat death. He has done it for our benefit.

1 John 3:8: He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Hebrews 2:14: Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

1 Corinthians 15:26: The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

A Christian ought to have a much different perspective on life and death after he becomes a Christian than before. A Christian ought to love and enjoy life much more than an unbeliever, even if he has problems. Problems plus God is better than problems plus nothing.

We Christians will usually say that we believe in the sanctity of life. If we love God we will oppose euthanasia and abortion.

1 Peter 3:10-11: For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

Proverbs 10:16: The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

Proverbs 11:19: As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

Proverbs 19:23: The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

John 10:10: The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Have you experienced life with Christ in it? Receiving Jesus as Savior is more a matter of life and death than we know. It includes mortal life and eternal life. He is able to overcome our tendencies toward death and inject a great tendency toward life into us. In fact He is the life and the life is in Him.

John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 1:4: In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Galatians 2:20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

1 John 5:12: He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
