No One Is Innocent
An elderly woman who spent her entire life in a mainline church recently told me that as long as we are innocent and believe in Jesus He makes allowances for us and we will get to Heaven. There are some serious errors in her theology. She believes that she is innocent but there have only been three innocent individuals in all the history of mankind, Adam and Eve before the fall and the Lord Jesus Christ. And Adam and Eve lost their innocence when they ate the forbidden fruit. The rest of us have NEVER been innocent.
Romans 2:12: For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
Romans 3:10-12, 19-20, 23: As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
James 2:10: For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
We do not become guilty when we learn from the law that we are guilty. We are guilty before we learn the law and with or without the law. That poor woman believes she is innocent. Like the rich man in Revelation 3:17 she does not believe that she is lost.
Revelation 3:17: Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
She does not believe that she needs to be forgiven for her sin. She believes in Jesus but she does not believe that she needs Him to save her from her sin. She does not know that she is wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked. Knowing that we are wretched is an unacceptable truth to those who reject Christ. After we have received Jesus into our hearts we are forgiven but even then our flesh is still not innocent. The Apostle Paul knew that his flesh was not innocent and was still wretched. That is why he knew and taught us that we need to walk in the Spirit. Our flesh is no better than his.
Romans 7:18a: For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: . . .
Roman 7:24-25: O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Galatians 5:16: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Join me in prayer for that lost woman, that the Holy Spirit will open her heart to Biblical truth so she will not rely upon her non-existent innocence but upon Jesus. She believes she is innocent and has never been lost. None of us ever believe that we need to be saved until we know that we are lost and wretched. We may not understand these things in detail, but we MUST understand that we need Jesus and without Him we are lost.
Luke 19:10: For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
It is an indispensable truth that we are not innocent. Saving faith is not faith in falsehood of any sort. Saving faith is in truth. We must not believe that we can get to Heaven because we are innocent, because we are NOT.
