Our Advocate

1 John 2:1: My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

American Tract Society Dictionary:

ADVOCATE, or Paraclete: One that pleads the cause of another. In its technical sense, the office was unknown to the Jews till they became subject to the Romans. It is applied to Christ as our intercessor, 1 John 2:1; . . .

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia:

Advocate: Found in 1 John 2:1, If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. The Greek word has several shades of meaning: (1) a legal advocate; (2) an intercessor, (3) a helper generally. In the passage before us the first and second meanings are included. Christ in heaven intercedes for Christians who sin upon earth. The next verse declares that He is the propitiation for our sins and it is His propitiatory work which lies at the basis of His intercession.

If you are a Christian Jesus Christ represents you before God. He is your Advocate. He pleads your cause. He has never prayed a prayer to God the Father on your behalf that has not been answered with a resounding YES. Our Advocate has never been turned down by the Father. He has a perfect record. He is batting 1000. He is 100% successful. He has never lost a case and He will never lose a case. As a Christian, everything is stacked in your favor. In God*s court there will never be a mistrial. There will be no appeals. God*s wiretaps are legal. No truth will be excluded. He knows everything. He is the arresting officer and the judge. Jesus is either your advocate and your saviour -- or He is your Judge. If He is your Savior He will see to it that you will not have to bear the punishment for your sin. He knows that He already bore it.

Romans 8:1: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 4:8: Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

I thank God that I am one of them. How about you?

If Jesus Christ is not your Savior He will be your Judge. If Jesus Christ is not your Savior you don*t have an Advocate before God. If Jesus Christ is not your Savior you have a zero chance of winning your case before God. If Christ is not your Savior no one bore the punishment for your crimes so you must bear your own. No one will ever win a case before God without Jesus.

Acts 4:12: Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Occasionally a person here on earth will represent himself in a court. It has been said that one who represents himself in court represents a fool. If one thinks he will be able to stand on his own two feet and represent himself before God he is a bigger fool. When he stands before God he won*t be able to speak what he wants to. He won*t be able to argue his cause. He will only be able to speak what God will allow. Therefore he will have no one to speak for him. There won*t be any perjury. No one will be able to deceive God or anyone else. People won*t even be able to deceive themselves any more.

Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Even unsaved people will praise God eventually but it will be too late for them to be saved.

Philippians 2:10-11: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

There are some major differences between God*s system of justice and the systems of justice that exist here on earth. Advocates in earthly justice systems are wrong about fifty percent of the time. Fifty percent represent unjust or losing causes. Fifty percent represent just or winning causes. In earthly justice systems just causes don*t always win and unjust causes don*t always lose. In God*s system His just cause always wins. Most earthly systems maintain that even the unjust deserve representation. In God*s system they apparently don*t deserve representation and they don*t get any. In earthly systems one must sometimes pay a steep price for representation. One injustice in earthly systems is that the most expensive advocates, the more skillful ones, sometimes win even though their cause is wrong. The wealthy have a better chance of winning. In earthly systems the advocate is often paid a retainer and his fees can multiply after that. In God*s system the retainer is simple faith in Christ. Once one places his trust in Christ the blessings flow from the advocate to the client. You might say that the advocate retains the client. In God*s system the Advocate even foots the bill.

1 Corinthians 6:20: For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God*s.

1 Peter 1:18-19: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Philippians 4:19: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

In earthly systems there is not necessarily mercy. In God*s system all those who trust Christ get mercy. Those who do not trust Christ get justice. In earthly systems justice is (hopefully) the goal. In God*s system mercy is the goal. If you are a wise person you will know that justice for you would be a disaster called Hell. You will know that the desirable result (Heaven) can come to you only because of mercy. In earthly systems we are presumably innocent fifty percent of the time. In God*s system we are guilty one hundred percent of the time. There is no one that is innocent.

Romans 3:10: As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

In earthly systems the guilty are (hopefully) found guilty. In God*s system only the guilty who reject Christ are found guilty. In God*s system the guilty who trust Christ are given His righteousness and are therefore found innocent.

2 Corinthians 5:21: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Occasionally people get a pardon in earthly systems. In God*s system there are no pardons outside of Jesus Christ. Only persons in authority such as governors or presidents can issue pardons. In God*s system He is the only one with the authority to pardon.

Mark 2:7b: . . . who can forgive sins but God only?

An earthly judge who lets a guilty person go free is guilty himself. When God lets a guilty person go free he is just and right in doing that because He has placed the sinner*s guilt upon Christ and placed Christ*s righteousness on the guilty person.

Romans 3:26: To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:21: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

No earthly judge can detach the guilt from the guilty one. Only God can do that.

Psalms 103:12: As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

In earthly systems advocates sometimes try to hide truth that hurts their client*s cause. They have rules of evidence that sometimes help in that process. Earthly systems sometimes arrive at wrong decisions by rejecting facts for stupid reasons. For instance guilty people have been set free because a police officer has done something illegal in obtaining the evidence against him. The police officer*s guilt does not make the criminal innocent. The police officer*s guilt does not make the evidence false. In God*s system another man*s guilt does not make me innocent. Earthly systems render imperfect decisions because the judges are imperfect just as the advocates are imperfect. There is truth that they cannot see. There is truth that they reject. There is truth that is hidden from them. The advocates have prejudices and the judges have prejudices. Earthly judges don*t always know who is telling the truth. God always knows. Earthly judges can only see external evidence. God sees what is in a person*s heart and he is a mind reader.

1 Samuel 16:7: But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Psalms 139:2: Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

In earthly systems attorneys never pay the penalty for their clients so they might go free. Attorneys never change places with one sentenced to death row. In earthly justice systems some litigants deserve to win. None of Jesus clients deserve to win. Perfect justice fell on Jesus so we can obtain perfect mercy. Fanny Crosby stated a wonderful truth in her hymn To God Be The Glory: The vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Romans 8:34: Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

1 Timothy 2:5: For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Hebrews 7:25: Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Hebrews 9:24: For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

Hebrews 8:6: But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Hebrews 8:1: Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

The one individual who would like to prosecute us is a liar and unable to tell the truth. He gets booted out of heaven before the trial. He is a perjurer who won*t be heard in the Lord*s justice system.

John 8:44: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Revelation 12:10: And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

The only people who lose are the ones who reject the pardon. The only people who lose are the ones who reject Christ.
