Pride Is Poison

Pride seems to have its tentacles into almost every sin that men commit. It is amazing that believers and unbelievers alike are able to see pride in others but not in themselves. It is also amazing that we can all despise it in others but enjoy it in ourselves. Being accused of pride is just about the most resented accusation that can be made. It seems to be the most difficult sin to repent of and at the same time the most difficult sin to forgive in others. It seems to be more automatic and habitual for us than any other sin. It is the most difficult sin to recognize in ourselves and even more difficult to get rid of. When we don*t know why people dislike us it is most likely because of our pride. Pride has no interest in God or in others. It is probably the most selfish sin and yet we love to share in it with others.

Pride is the number one sin on God*s hate list.

Proverbs 6:16-19: These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Pride prevents God*s grace.

James 4:6: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Pride is probably the sin against which we are most helpless. It is the most secretive, the most complex and the most far-reaching sin. It separates us from God the quickest and the farthest and is the most dangerous sin. It does the most harm to oneself. It is the most mysterious, the most devious and the ugliest sin. It is the sin against which we need God*s help and wisdom the most.

Pride is always present in us until our salvation. God miraculously humbles us at our salvation moment and then pride quickly tries to reassert itself.

Pride was Satan*s first sin.

Isaiah 14:12-15: How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
