Pure Instruments Of God
Surgeons use sterilized instruments when doing surgery. Wounds must be cleansed before healing can occur. Untreated viral and bacterial infections can make us desperately ill or kill us. Cleanliness preserves physical health and sometimes life itself. Sin is a spiritual infection in our lives that prevents God from using us. Everything that God does flows through His holiness and because of His holiness.
When the Lord first gave me ministry He gave me a very wise mentor. His name was Harold Wilfong. Each time we would minister he would ask for the Lord*s forgiveness and cleansing that he might be used by the Lord. I am not belittling a servant of God like Harold when I say these things. He was not a well-trained preacher. He was crude and there were some other distracting lacks in his ability to minister. But because God had made him a pure instrument he bore an incredible amount of fruit. He taught me and then I learned from experience that my ministries have always been more fruitful when I have remembered to seek forgiveness and cleansing BEFORE I attempted to minister, even in seemingly unimportant little areas of service, before praying, before reading the Bible, before everything. Like Harold, I am not wonderful, but the work of God through me is wonderful when I am forgiven. Being forgiven and purified is more important than being well-trained, well-prepared, articulate, attractive, talented or anything else.
2 Corinthians 4:7: But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
Job 17:9: The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.
Psalms 24:3-5: Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Isaiah 33:15-16: He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; 16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.
Psalms 51:10-13: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
2 Corinthians 7:1: Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
The Tree of Life, according to some of the old rabbinical legends, lifted its branches, by an indwelling motion, high above impure hands that were stretched to touch them; and until our hands are cleansed through faith in Jesus Christ, its richest fruit hangs unreachable, golden above our heads. The fullness of the life of Heaven is only granted to those who, drawing near Jesus Christ by faith on earth, have thereby cleansed themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit.
