Run The Right Race

Hebrews 12:1: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Who set the race that is before you? If you have received Jesus God did. If you are not a Christian, Satan did.

Ephesians 2:10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

You may have heard the expression the Devil is in the details. That is only true for you if you are not a Christian. If you are a Christian, God is in the details, all of the details.

Sometimes I have wondered if I was in the race God had chosen for me. I have wondered for various lengths of time. Sometimes I wondered for moments and sometimes for months. When I have really needed to know, He has always been on time in letting me know. Once I wondered if I was driving my car where the Lord wanted me to go. Within minutes I drove up behind a truck with my last name emblazoned on its back door in letters about 6 feet high. I suddenly had great peace that I was going where the Lord wanted me. For a few months after I moved geographically I wondered if I had misunderstood where the Lord wanted me to go. I wondered if I had obeyed my flesh or Him. It took a few months to find the ministry He wanted me in. I shared the gospel with an individual who then received Christ. Peace returned to my heart instantly. Whenever someone calls upon the name of the Lord in my hearing I know that I am exactly where the Lord wants me and I am there at exactly the right time. Whenever you are a blessing to someone, it can be a wonderful sign-post from the Lord.

I visited an elderly woman in failing health in an intensive-care unit. After the visit I was praying on the way back to my car. It had not occurred to me to share the gospel with her during the visit even though she had convinced me that she was an unbeliever in several previous visits. I told the Lord that if He kept her alive for another week until my next visit I would share the gospel with her. I suddenly had a thought that I firmly believe came from the Lord: What? You want me to let that woman suffer for another week before I save her? I retraced my steps to her room. She was surprised that I came back and gave me a bright smile. I shared some scripture with her and she asked Jesus to save her.

Sometimes there are U-turns, detours and bumps in God*s will. Sometimes there are red lights. There are open doors and closed doors to show us the way. The Bible teaches us principles to live by and the Lord leads us within those principles. When you wonder if you are in the race that God wants you in, study your Bible and ask Him. He wouldn*t be much of a God if He wanted you to do something but neglected to tell you what it is. Jeremiah was right when he prayed thus:

Jeremiah 10:23b: . . . it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Sometimes even when we are in the race that God wants us in, we move too slowly. Lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, If you sense that you are moving too slowly for the Lord, or in the wrong race, there may be some sin slowing you down that you need to confess and forsake. There may be some sin keeping you from hearing His voice. Sometimes the weights we need to lay aside are good things. You may be carrying some weight that the Lord wants some other Christian to carry. Or you may be trying to carry some weight that only God can carry. When you find His will it is not wise to drag your feet or carry extra weights. My Pastor wisely said No one else can do my job. That is true of every Christian.

Ecclesiastes 9:10: Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
