Saved From Selfishness
We like to be saved from the consequences of our sin but we don*t normally have an interest in being saved from our selfishness.
Judges 21:25: In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
Proverbs 12:15: The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
The problem with doing what is right in our own eyes is that we might for a time do that. But then we violate our own standards and consciences and lower our own standards. And then we lower them again and again and again. Without God turning us around it is forever downhill. It worked that way for me for 43 years until I received Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:16: But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
Family Bible Notes on 2 Timothy 2:16:
They will increase; or they, that is, the men who are given to these babblings, will proceed to more ungodliness.
2 Timothy 3:13: But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
Albert Barnes NT Commentary on Verse 13.
But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse. That is, it is the character of such men to do this; they may be expected to do it. This is the general law of depravity--that if men are not converted, they are always growing worse, and sinking deeper into iniquity. Their progress will be certain, though it may be gradual.
Romans 15:1: We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. 3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
Have you been saved from selfishness? Has God made you increasingly unselfish?
