Sinful Dreams

No Christian in my memory has told me that he has had sinful dreams or what he does about them. I had one last night. Perhaps it was to cause me to write this article. I googled the subject and found some wisdom that is worth sharing. Several wise men have said that our dreams are often the result or a continuation of what we have thought, said, done or desired during the course of the previous day.

Philippians 4:8: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Sometimes when I have had sinful dreams I have not thought about right things the previous day, particularly later in the day. Sometimes I have become painfully aware that even my day-dreams are sinful. My day-dreams are sometimes very similar to my night dreams. The better we control our thoughts and imaginations while we are awake, the purer our night dreams will be.

2 Corinthians 10:5: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Sinful dreams can be a beneficial reminder that we have a sinful and unworthy flesh that needs to be subdued every day (and every night). We commit many sins that we don*t even know about. We should certainly confess to the Lord the ones we know about AND ask forgiveness for the ones we don*t know about. I am comforted by a couple of passages from the Bible.

1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

All unrighteousness includes the wakeful unrighteousness and the unrighteousness we might imagine while we are asleep.

Lamentations 3:22-23: It is of the LORD*S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Since He told that us His mercies are new every morning, He must have known we would commit sins at night, even our sinful dreams.

1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Perhaps the way of escape from sinful dreams is to be led by the Lord all day every day. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil would be a good prayer to pray at bed-time.

On a positive note, I have had dreams that I firmly believe were inspired by the Lord. When I first became a Christian I had a recurring dream that I would share the gospel with folk and they would receive Christ. I believe that dream helped make me willing to share the gospel. That dream has come true.
