Spiritual Food AND Spiritual Exercise

1 Peter 2:1-3: Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

John 4:33-34: Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

The Bible is both spiritual milk and spiritual meat for believers. We need a combination of Bible study and serving the Lord if we are to grow spiritually. My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Spiritual balance will include both study and service. New-born Christians will start out making baby steps in reading the Bible and baby steps in serving. As they grow they will take bigger steps in Bible study and bigger steps in serving. Too often we do what we want to do instead of asking God what He wants us to do. Doing what we want to do instead of what God wants us to do will stunt our spiritual growth. Neglecting the Bible will also stunt our growth. Neglecting the Bible and neglecting service will weaken our ability to resist temptation and will make us carnal. New Christians have a legitimate reason not to be spiritually strong and mature but we long-time Christians only have excuses.

1 Corinthians 3:1-3: And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

Are you studying the Bible AND serving the Lord? Am I?
