Treasure In Earthen Vessels
2 Corinthians 4:7: But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
The treasure is the Lord Jesus, eternal life and everything that goes along with it.
Colossians 2:10: And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
Ephesians 3:17a: That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; . . .
Many of my favorite passages in the Bible are those that speak about Christ living in us. Those of us who have received Jesus have wonderful treasure within us.
1 John 5:11-12: And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
The passage is in the present tense. We who have received Jesus have eternal life in us here and now. When we get to Heaven we will be Heavenly vessels. The earthen vessels can only be here and now. To a great extent, we can enjoy the eternal life that is in us here and now. Eternal life will be wonderful all the time when we get to Heaven. There will be no more pain, no more sickness, no more death, no more tears. There will be endless joy. We could go on for a long time about what that wonderful place will be like. But we can often enjoy being citizens of Heaven here and now. We can have little tastes of Heaven here and now.
In Heaven we will be able to talk to the Lord Jesus. We can talk to Him here and now in prayer. Talking to Him can be a little taste of Heaven. We will be able to hear from Him. We can hear from Him here and now by reading the Bible and hearing others read it. Hearing from Him can be a little taste of Heaven. We will always obey Him up there. We can obey Him here and now and have a little taste of Heaven whenever we obey Him. We will share love and fellowship with multitudes of people up there. We can share love and fellowship with many individuals here and now. That can be a little taste of Heaven. We will have continual joy in Heaven. The Lord can give us joy here and now, another taste of Heaven.
The reason we cannot always enjoy the eternal life that is in us here and now is that we have it in earthen vessels. The Bible calls our earthen vessels our flesh. Our flesh interferes with the enjoyment of the eternal life that is in us. Our flesh wants to sin. Our flesh wants to live an earthly life. Our flesh is like a wet blanket that tries to smother the eternal life that is in us. Our flesh cannot extinguish the eternal life that is in us, but when we sin, it can take away many of the little tastes of Heaven that we might have without the sin. If we stubbornly continue in sin, it can take away ALL of the little tastes of heaven that the Lord wants to give us. The more we obey the Lord the more little tastes of Heaven He will give us here and now.
Psalms 34:8: O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
The way to get your first taste of Heaven is to receive Jesus into your heart. Once you have done that, He will want to give you countless little tastes of Heaven here and now and He will take you to Heaven when your time comes. You will be tasting Heaven forever. Are you enjoying your treasure now?
