Under The Influence
The phrase is most commonly used of people who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Both of those groups and many more are under the influence of Satan and need to be under the influence of God. Adam and Eve were the first to fall under the influence of Satan. Satan has numberless ways to influence their descendants into a multitude of evil offenses. Men may not commit all evils but they are capable of them. They push evil to the limit. Their intentions to commit evil are always compound. Their intentions will most always include more than one evil. The influence of Satan is a package deal. Sins almost never travel alone.
Jeremiah 3:5: Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.
Psalms 21:11: For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.
James 2:10: For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
When people commit one evil but not others it is only because the Holy Spirit has restrained them from other evils. Thankfully God limits how much evil people can do who are under the influence of Satan.
2 Thessalonians 2:7: For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
Many passages in the Bible connect one evil with others.
John 8:44: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Note that the word lusts is plural. The same one who is a murderer is a liar.
Proverbs 28:24: Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.
Thieves are accomplices of destroyers.
Proverbs 29:24: Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.
Accomplices of thieves don*t mind cursing. It is interesting that they also hate themselves.
Proverbs 18:9: He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
Lazy individuals are also wasteful.
Here is the influence that we ought to be under:
2 Corinthians 5:14a: For the love of Christ constraineth us; . . .
Psalms 37:23: The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
Steps is plural in the passage. Individuals who walk in the steps that the Lord has ordered are delighted in those steps. Being under the influence of God will also produce more than one fruit. John the Baptist spoke of fruit(s) meet for repentance . . . Matthew 3:8. Multiple fruits are listed in both passages where the phrase fruit of the Spirit appears.
Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Ephesians 5:9: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Whose influence is multiplying in your life?
