What Keeps Me From Serving God
Satan, TV and laziness. I am sure there are many other things that keep me from serving Him.
Blessedly the Lord helps in all of those areas. Recently there have been many occasions when He has made TV just plain distasteful, disgusting and disappointing to me. Watching TV is often watching other people*s imagined ideas of what life should be, rather than living the one He wants me to live. It is usually letting others who are evil control my thoughts.
2 Corinthians 10:5: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Can I watch TV and yet keep control of my thoughts. Even more important, can I watch TV and let Jesus control my thoughts. Can I turn it on only when He wants to? Can I turn it off when He wants me to? When I watch TV can I still hear His still small voice? When I watch TV can I still remember that He loves me and that I am His child?
1 John 3:1: Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:
It is often more satisfying to turn the TV off and sit silently simply knowing that God is MY God and I have pleased Him by turning it off.
Psalms 46:10: Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
When TV has not satisfied me, I sometimes realize that I might as well turn it off and do something for the Lord. I get double satisfaction because I have resisted temptation and I have tried to please Him. Sometimes I get more satisfaction when I turn off the TV and do something for the Lord than when I plan to do something for Him and then do it. Sometimes I get more satisfaction when I turn off something that I really WANT to watch. My pastor once wisely said that the hardest person to say no to is yourself.
Luke 9:23: And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Hebrews 12:1-2b: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus . . .
When I watch TV am I looking unto Jesus?
Philippians 3:17: Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
When I watch TV am I following Paul*s example?
1 Timothy 4:12: Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
When I watch TV am I being a good example?
Proverbs 18:9: He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
When I watch TV am I being lazy?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-17: Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing.
When I watch TV can I rejoice and pray?
Matthew 6:10b: . . . Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
When I watch TV am I doing God*s will?
How would you feel if your loved ones never gave you a thought or spoke to you? Does God deserve your attention more than your loved ones deserve yours? I have hit myself between the eyes with these thoughts as much as you. What keeps you from serving God?
