While He Is Near
Throughout the ages God has reached down to save men from Hell. He chooses certain times to seek each of us. We must respond to Him when He does. Salvation is so completely a gift of God that He chooses the time and place when He will offer it to us. He knows exactly the right time to give it. As He seeks us, God speaks to us in several miraculously coordinated ways.
He speaks to us by arranging the circumstances and events of our lives to show us our need for Him. For some, He may only do that once. For others He may do it again and again. Each time they refuse to respond to Him their heart gets a little harder. When they do not say yes to Him as He deals with them gently, He MIGHT speak to them again more forcefully to show them they need Him. He does not owe us even one chance to receive Him, much less more chances. God alone knows when an individual has rejected Him often enough that the individual has become anathema maranatha, cursed forever. He knows when they have made themselves eternally reprobate. He alone knows when rejecting Him once or more than once has finally and completely caused their horrible fate.
1 Corinthians 16:22: If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.
Romans 1:28a: And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, . . .
He knows when an individual is beyond hope. He knows when it is too late for someone to receive Him as it was for Esau.
Hebrews 12:16-17: Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
He speaks to us through our conscience and through His Creation.
Romans 1:19-20: Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
He speaks to us through His Word.
Romans 10:17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:13: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
1 Corinthians 1:21: For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
He speaks to us through the Holy Spirit.
John 16:7-8: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Genesis 6:3a: And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, . . .
It is vitally important that we respond to Him at the moment that He offers Himself to us.
Isaiah 55:6: Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
2 Corinthians 6:2: (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
Isaiah 49:8a: Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, . . .
