Why Do I Watch TV

If I ask myself that question, it sometimes helps me to leave the TV turned off and if I ask the question while I am watching it often helps me to turn it off. The Lord has often given me the impression that He wants me to turn it off. I have turned it off just after programs started, in the middle of programs and just before the conclusion of programs. And I am surprised at how often I am glad that I did. I have often been surprised when I found I didn*t need TV. The most significant thing has been that when the TV is off I can sense the presence of the Lord far better.

Psalms 46:10a: Be still, and know that I am God: . . .

I can be still far better if I don*t have messengers of Satan disrupting the stillness. When I first became saved more mature Christians told me about the evils of TV. But I didn*t really believe them. Some things I have had to learn for myself the hard way. My life is often better without TV. I am often more at peace without it. I get more done without it.

So why do I watch TV?

The worst reason is that it has been an addiction. We probably all need to admit that it is an addiction. Like any addiction it is easier to get rid of if we replace it with something better. The Lord has given me some other addictions.

1 Corinthians 16:15 -16: I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) 16 That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.

I am now addicted to studying the Bible, prayer, reading spiritual books, writing Bible studies, preaching, church, evangelism and fellowshipping with other believers.

To be entertained. The Lord has more and more made TV boring to me. If you give Him half a chance He will do that for you too. It is false entertainment. It is one of Satan*s methods of leading our attention away from the Lord and His will. More and more often it cannot hold my attention and I fall asleep. When people told these things to me when I was a new believer I thought they were legalists. I have learned they were right. They were wiser than me and they loved me and wanted to help me have a better relationship with the Lord.

To pass the time. Most of it is a waste of time.

Because I am too tired to do anything else. The Lord has often given me enough energy to do something else and when I have done it I sleep peacefully.

Because I am not thinking or don*t want to think. The creators of TV programming are ready and willing to do our thinking for us. More and more I prefer to have the Lord in charge of my thoughts.

2 Corinthians 10:5: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

There is nothing else to do. Another lie from Satan.

Psalms 113:3: From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD*S name is to be praised.

Luke 19:13: And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.

I am bored. If you don*t find the things of God more interesting and exciting than TV you are paying too much attention to TV and you are not paying enough attention to Him. Those are still my problems as well as yours.

Sometimes I am flat out disobeying the Lord. His forgiveness is available.

To be informed. We need to very careful who we are listening to and who we believe.

John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Mark 7:21-23: For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Truth is not on any list of what comes out of the hearts of unforgiven sinners. If just one of the items listed in the passage above is part of a program, you can expect more of those items out of it. Do not expect truth to be there. If a program promotes or glorifies anything on the list change the channel.

Adulteries and fornications. How often are those the main parts of a program? Murders. If a man wants to burglarize my home and you hold the door for him, you are not pro-choice, you are pro-burglary. If someone wants to kill babies and you make it legal for them you are not pro-choice, you are pro murdering babies.

Deceit. If news announcers lie themselves or make heroes of other liars, don*t expect truth from them on any issue.

Violence. I am losing interest in programs that find it amusing when people get hurt by smashing into things and falling down and athletic events that are violent.

Genesis 6:13: And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

To follow sports events. I used to root for the home teams, no matter how they played the game. Now I often find myself rooting for the teams and individuals that are doing their best while playing within the rules. I find myself rooting against the cheaters and those who deliberately hurt their opponents. I root for those who give glory to God for victories and are humble in defeat.

To hear Bible teaching. This is the best reason to watch TV but we even need to be careful of that because of the many unbiblical teachers there are.

Acts 17:11: These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

I am very thankful for something the Lord has done for me. If you ask Him He will do it for you. Often when I turn the TV on and go through some channels, every channel makes me angry. Sometimes I realize that no matter how many I go to, they are all going to make me angry. I am angry with myself for turning it on and I am angry because the creators of those programs have not created anything wholesome that will bless me. They have not created anything that I can enjoy. They only seem to create programs that would lead me away from the Lord. So I turn it off and seek Him.

Please pray for me that I will get from TV only what the Lord wants me to get from it and I will pray that you will get only what the Lord wants you to get from it.
