You Must Know About Your Flesh
The only way to accurately know about yourself is to know what God knows about you. No one else knows you as perfectly as He does. He is omniscient. He knows everything. Unbelievers don*t know how bad off they are until they believe what God says about them. Believers don*t know how blessed they are until they believe what God says about them either. The most important thing we need to know about ourselves is whether or not we belong to the Lord. He knows.
2 Timothy 2:19b: . . . The Lord knoweth them that are his. . . .
We need to know what the Bible says about is our flesh. We need to know how depraved it is. Our flesh is sinful before we become saved and remains sinful after. Knowing how evil our flesh is before we are saved can convince us that we need to receive Christ. Knowing how evil our flesh is after we are saved can keep us focused on the battle of good against evil that goes on within us. It can keep us mindful that we need the Lord*s help to keep our flesh under control. We don*t become saved because our flesh is righteous and we don*t live the Christian life because our flesh is righteous. Our flesh is not righteous. We become saved because God is merciful and we live the Christian life because he is merciful.
Galatians 5:16: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Luke 18:13: And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
Romans 12:1: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Lamentations 3:22: It is of the LORD*S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
It is amazing how ignorant we believers can be about our flesh. The Bible teaches that we have three enemies, the world, the flesh and the Devil. It seems harder to remember that our flesh is an enemy. There is a wise military adage that says: know thine enemy.
Romans 8:5-7: For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
A critical thing for a Christian to know is that he can overcome his flesh only with the help and power of the Lord Jesus.
Romans 7:24-25: O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
John 15:5: I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Every victory is a victory over our flesh. Every victory is because of our faith in the Lord Jesus.
1 John 5:4: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Faith is also the victory over our flesh and the Devil.
Jeremiah 10:23: O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
Psalms 37:23: The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
